Description:
After learning things the hard way with his first band Klinger, Ben Birchall is poised and ready for some solo exposure. Being swept under the rug is not an option for this 25-year-old skilled singer/songwriter. His debut solo EP Year of the Monkey shows more than promise and potential.
The six tracks featured on Year of the Monkey are spawned of pop song structure, but just rough enough around the edges so the sound is not too polished nor overproduced. Birchall's backing band, The Corrections, compliment his voice well, which is somewhat reminiscent of his heroes Ray Davies and Elvis Costello. Two of the stand-out tracks are "Ray," about the first wife of author Raymond Carver, and "Not You It's Me," which Birchall claims is his "three-minute musical apology."
Triple J and Rage have already rendered their services, giving Ben a well-deserved head start. The EP's opening track and single "Three Minute Revolution" has slipped into rotation at both outlets, garnering a notably warm reception.
