CAREFUL HE MIGHT HEAR YOU (1983):

In the turbulent Depression years an orphaned boy becomes a pawn in a bitter family feud as two aunts’ battle for his custody. While wealthy socialite Vanessa (Wendy Hughes) lavishes the boy with gifts and affection, the dowdy Lila (Robyn Nevin) is determined to fight her sister’s custody claims in court. The case is complicated by the arrival of the boy’s long-absent father (John Hargreaves), an alcoholic who loves his son but cannot care for him. Adapted from the classic Sumner Locke Elliot novel, this lush period drama won 8 AFI Awards including Best Film and Best Actress for a brilliant Wendy Hughes.

THE GETTING OF WISDOM (1977):

This award-winning coming-of-age tale introduces chronicles a young girl’s (Susannah Fowle) stormy passage through the sedate halls of an expensive Melbourne finishing school. A charming portrait of an imaginative country girl who refuses to be broken to fit the mould of a Victorian-era young lady, the film is based on the immortal book by Henry Handel Richardson, was directed by Bruce Beresford (Don’s Party, Breaker Morant), and boasts fine performances from Barry Humphries, John Waters (Breaker Morant) and future stars Sigrid Thornton (Sea Change) and Kerry Armstrong (Lantana).
