Description
Underneath the Southern Cross is a 2CD collection of iconic Australian artists and timeless songs, many of
which have become deeply embedded in the Australian national identity. Underneath the Southern Cross includes
the latest rock acts such as Wolfmother, Jet, Grinspoon and The Living End as well as classic rock artists like The
Angels, Divinyls, Dragon and Rose Tattoo as well as the essential Australian anthems “Great
Southern Land” – Icehouse and “Down Under” - Men At Work.
The Eureka flag on the cover art is a powerful symbol representing the Australian cultural spirit that
encompasses democratic rights and freedom, justice, tolerance and the “Aussie” way of allowing everyone a fair
go. It is the oldest flag in Australia and was designed and made by the people. In 1854 the flag was flown for the
first time as a symbol of resistance during the Eureka Stockade, the gold miners rebellion at Bakery Hill,
Ballarat. Under the flag, Peter Lalor, the leader of the resistance proclaimed: “We swear by the Southern Cross
to stand truly by each other and fight to defend our rights and liberties”.
