The North Carolina-based trio has amassed an international legion of fans through the pop-catchy but intense piano-driven melodies; the strong, heartfelt lead singing of Ben Folds; the propulsive drumming and background vocals of Darren Jessee; and the melodic, swinging anchor of Robert Sledge on the bass and background vocals. The album was produced by Caleb Southern, who has produced all of the band's work to date, and recorded in New York, Los Angeles, and Hoboken, New Jersey. The album was mixed by Andy Wallace, whose credits include Jeff Buckley, Nirvana, Jane's Addiction, and Sheryl Crow, among many others. "Army," written by Ben Folds, is the first single. The Unauthorized Biography Of Reinhold Messner incorporates new sounds into the band's fresh yet timeless combination of piano, bass, and drums. Keyboards, tympani, string instruments, and the Squirrel Nut Zippers horns complement the core trio, and showcase Ben Folds Five's increasing ambition and musical dexterity.
