Description
André Rieu playing the music of Vienna is as intoxicating as a glass of champagne on New Years Eve. Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra serve up some of the most beloved melodies of old Vienna on this exuberant disc from Philips. The tradition of leading the orchestra from the violin goes back to Strauss's imperial Vienna and Rieu has brilliantly assumed the title of Waltz King.
The festive program opens with Rieu's 'Strauss Party,' a medley of favorites containing the raucous "Radetzky March," Rossini's Overture to 'William Tell' and the "Can Can" from Offenbach's 'Orpheus in the Underworld.' The sheer joy of the music making is infectious, and the stunning virtuosity of Rieu and his orchestra will take your breath away. Of course Rieu is a superb violinist and he slows things down with a deeply felt performance of Jules Massenet's haunting "Meditation" from 'Thaïs.' High spirits close the program as Rieu and company launch into a medley entitled 'Carnival of Venice.' With charm and boundless energy this stellar group swirls through popular tunes by Verdi, Waldteufel and of course, Johann Strauss.
