Description
Back in the day, Beck wasn't the slo-jammin, sexx law defyin' cat he is now. No, no. And before the days of "Loser" and Mellow Gold, there was an even more basic, yet still diversified young artist inside of him. The recordings on the oddites collection that is Stereopathetic Soulmanure illustrate this.
Recorded from 1988 to 1994, Stereopathetic is a lengthy and eclectic dose of Beck. Fans will surely dig the rickety guitar twangs of the more folksy tracks like "Rowboat" and "Crystal Clear (Beer)". Then turn 180 degrees and bump "Pink Noise" and "Rollins Power Sauce." In the meantime, kick the funky beats of "Thunder Peel" and "Total Soul Future (Eat It)". This CD covers just about everything Beck could do with his limited resources in those days.
The most entertaining tracks, though, are the live, almost improvised tracks like "One Foot In the Grave" and the fitting tribute, "Ozzy." Here, the warped humor of Beck and his abstract ideas pair up and come out at something you're likely to laugh at the first time, and then you treasure the songs because you realize just how original they are.
