Description:
Christopher Hogwood directs The Academy of Ancient Music in three symphonies by Stamitz, coupled with Stamitz’ Clarinet Concerto with soloist Alan Hacker. Originally published in 1975 on the L’Oiseau Lyre label, this recording has been remastered and is the first international release on CD.

One of the most influential figures in European music during the 18th century, Stamitz composed no less than 58 symphonies and 10 orchestra trios. An innovator of the classical symphony, he expanded the traditional three movements to four, adding a Minuet and Trio in to over half of his symphonies, as well as expanding the overall orchestral score.

Alan Hacker, clarinettist, is celebrated as a champion of both contemporary and classical repertoire. The Times said of Alan Hacker: ‘to everything, even a Frescobaldi Canzona arranged for clarinet and piano, in defiance of the Authenticity movement for which Hacker has elsewhere laboured valuably, he has something uncommon, fresh and very musical to bring. He is without doubt, our clarinet player hors concours, a musician to be treasured in our midst’.

The Academy of Ancient Music is directed by Christopher Hogwood who, among others, led the English revival in the use of authentic instruments and performing styles.
