In 1966, Brian Wilson, hot off the success of the ground-breaking Beach Boys album Pet Sounds, embarked on a project with his new songwriting partner, Van Dyke Parks, an album he said would be 'a musical story of America'. The writing and recording process for Smile, however, devolved into chaos. The unfinished project was shelved and Wilson fell victim to his increasing bouts of depression. As Wilson now prepares finally to release Smile to the public, Dominic Priore, dubbed by MOJO 'the world's foremost Smile-ologist', has written the definitive book on the entire experience - from the original recording to the revival tour and beyond.
