The Shiralee comes the closest of any movie to embodying the spirit of Australia. It is set in the 1930s-50s and centres around Macauley, (played by Bryan Brown), a battling Aussie bloke, who has it all. An unfaithful wife, an unrequited affair with a butcher's daughter, an enormous chip on his shoulder, a friend in every town and a young daughter, Buster. Whilst Bryan Brown was perfectly cast in the role of Macauley, it is Rebecca Smart who plays Buster, Macauley's daughter, who makes this film shine.
