Description
LFO hail from Leeds and originally comprised of Mark Bell and Gez Varley. Early in 1990 they met up, by chance, with the directors of
Warp Records who, on the strength of a few rough demos, immediately signed them up. LFO moved into the spotlight in 1990 with the spectacular success of their first single titled "LFO" which entered the UK charts at number 12, followed by the album " Frequencies".The second album "Advance" came out in1996. Mark & Gez spent the period between albums working on separate projects and many remixes. Probably the most well know of these collaborations is their work with Kraftwerk, however, they also produced mixes for other such luminaries including: Afrika Bambaata¹s "Planet Rock", Yellow Magic Orchestra and the Art of Noise. After the release of "Advance", which was critically acclaimed and appeared in the top list of several music magazines, Gez and Mark decided to go their separate ways. Mark Bell retained the working name LFO and remains signed to
Warp Records. The first of Mark¹s solo projects was the co-production of the Bjork album Homogenic. He also found time to remix an assortment of artists including Radiohead, Gus Gus and Sabres Of Paradise. Mark then produced the last Depeche Mode album Exciter before returning his energies to his own work.
MARK BELL SAYS, "Over the past 7 years, even though working with other people, I¹ve still been making LFO tracks. My friend Shaun Kendrick keeps copies of them as I¹m crap at filing things. He made a mixtape of some of these tracks for himself to listen to in his car. When he played it to me, I was surprised as I couldn¹t remember doing half of them and it sounded like an album. I thought brilliant! I can give this to
Warp and they won¹t pester me every 2 years."
Despite the massive LFO trademark bass and the electronic nature of the production, "Sheath" is incredibly intricate and at times, even delicate, at other times, almost organic and has loads of soul (try "track 7 "Sleepy Chicken" for a little slice of electronic heaven), then again it can go nutso (like "Freak", "Mummy, I've Had An Accident..."). The reviews on the chat pages are all fantastic for this wicked album.
