Herb Alpert's musical aesthetic is marked by popular dance rhythms and the expansive sound of his trumpet. One can identify his work by the combination of these aspects, as he and the music industry have evolved over the decades. SECOND WIND, released in 1996, is his 33rd album. The music here features his blazing, moody trumpet casting a passionately thoughtful light over slick and poppy rhythms.
"Flamingo," a hit for Duke Ellington in the 1940s, is given a light and balmy shading with the exotic bass work of Jimmy Johnson and an incessant and relaxed tempo from percussionist Luis Conte. Alpert's horn bursts over this rhythmic flow, its broad tones contrasting with the combo.
