Description
The Gewandhaus Orchestra, Leipzig, have the music of Schumann and his contemporaries in their blood. Schumann spent much of his adult life in the city and these recordings, under their music director Riccardo Chailly, may well become definitive performances of his four symphonies.
The editions of these Symphonies are curious and novel, as they include the revisions made by Gustav Mahler. Few, if any, recordings exist of these versions. Mahler was a life-long Schumann enthusiast, and his editing, coupled with his intuitive understanding of the orchestral score, make for enhanced music and allow Schumann’s original intentions to be communicated with even greater effect.
Since his arrival as the principal conductor of the Gewandhaus, Chailly has rejuvenated the orchestra, and their interpretations of the German Romantic repertoire have won rave reviews around the world.
Their collaboration has garnered the Gewandhaus Orchestra some very important awards, including Record of the Year at the 2007 Gramophone Awards and their CD of Schumann’s Symphonies 2 & 4 won a 2007 Echo Award.
