PEARL JAM

Pearl Jam continued their streak of excellent concerts with this show on June 18, 2000, in Salzburg, Austria. This is an outdoor show right in the town square, which makes for a unique atmosphere. Further enhancing the event is a great set list with a superb mix of material and tight playing. The band does one of their occasional improvs, this one surprisingly folky in feeling. There are two songs tagged onto the end of "Daughter" this time. One is their own "WMA," with the lyric, "white male American" changed to "white male Austrian." The other is Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall." After the band begins the encore set with the heavily political tunes, "Do the Evolution" and "Insignificance," Eddie Vedder takes a minute to comment on the political situation in Austria. He says that they considered not playing there, but that would be punishing people who didn't deserve to be. However, he makes it clear that the band doesn't support the current situation. The band drives home the point later by closing with their renown cover of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World." A great night in an unusual place -- easily within the Top Ten shows of the European tour and a highly recommended purchase. ~ Steven Jacobetz, AMG
