Description

Combining folk and classical influences into what may well be rock’s first concept EP, Reason and Rhyme is the inaugural release for Melbourne-based artist The Merlin Bird.Six years and tens of thousands of dollars in the making, and it’s still only twenty minutes long! The music has been variously compared to Enya, Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull, but with a modern edge.Points of interest: Most of the female vocals were performed by Beck Sian Robson, who is second cousin to English rock great Kate Bush. As well as being a formidable vocal talent in her own right, Beck’s timbre and intonations sound a dead ringer for those of cousin Kate. Fans of Ms. Bush take note. The songs are richly layered. This is perhaps best demonstrated by the fact that producer Trevor Carter has, in his 18 years as a producer, only twice had his computer crash because there were too many tracks for it to handle. Once was on the first song, and the other on the fifth.
