Description
E Nesbit's classic family story The Railway Children comes to life for another generation in a sumptuous new production.
In 1905, three children, Roberta, Phyllis and Peter, find that their lives change completely when their father (
Michael Kitchen) is escorted away from London by two mysterious gentlemen. Their possessions are sold and their mother (
Jenny Agutter) takes them away to live in the country.
With no money and no servants, the children learn to fend for themselves. The children become friendly with Mr Perks, the station porter, and their lives begin to revolve around the railway.
On an old piece of newspaper, Roberta discovers that their father has been accused of treason and is in jail. She keeps the terrible secret to herself, sharing it only with an old gentleman (
Richard Attenborough) who has befriended them, and with his help the children are finally reunited with their father.
