Description

PUBERTY BLUES (1981):
87 minutes
Bruce Beresford’s coming-of-age classic based on the best-selling book by Kathy Lette. The late 70s, a coastal suburb, and two pretty adolescent females desperately try to break into the ""in"" crowd who rule Greenhill beach. Once accepted, the main protagonist, Debbie (Nell Schofield) and her life-long companion Sue (Jad Capelja) fall into the group's vices, including drug-use and casual sex. At first, they willingly present themselves to the males of the group, ready to serve their pre-chosen lover's every need. Soon, though, the girls grow tired of occupying the victim role, and they work to regain respect and equality.

MONKEY GRIP (2004):
101 minutes
Based on the novel by Helen Garner, this acclaimed Australian drama stars Colin Friels and Noni Hazlehurst, who won the Best Actress AFI for her startling lead performance. It’s the story of Nora, a teacher and writer recently divorced and caring for her 13 year-old daughter in a share house. Trying to live free of domesticity and dependence upon men, she is soon drawn into an obsessive relationship with a handsome actor addicted to heroin. Set in inner Melbourne within a network of talented and reckless artists, the film unfolds over two summers, and brilliantly explores Nora’s changing world as she regains control of her life.

DIMBOOLA (1979):
94 minutes
The small country town of Dimboola is preparing for the nuptials of locals Morrie McAdam (Bruce Spence) and Maureen Delaney (Natalie Bate). But Morrie has yet to undergo the rigours of the shearing shed bucks party – an evening that promises plenty of booze, obscenities, and Angelique - a stripper who’ll do more than just strip – if the price is right! The mayhem is worsened when Morrie’s mother reveals that the future bride and groom could be first cousins! Based on the beloved stage play by Jack Hibberd and directed by John Duigan (The Year My Voice Broke), Dimboola celebrates the unique rituals of marriage – Australian style!
