Description
This man is just a legend ! Of the 13 songs on this album, not one is anything less than a masterpiece. He has an uncanny knack of bringing a new melody to each song and infusing it with a life and vigour that is so desperately lacking in music today. You would happily believe he has lived each song, such is his passionate voice and arrangement. Indeed the arrangement often harks back to music hall days only with the sort of updated twist that has previously been the sole domain of arrangers such as Joby Talbot.
Opener Cigarettes & Chocolate Milk is fantastic. It is cruel that such a beautiful song will never receive the push that his talent deserves to bring it to the attention of the mainstream. If that were ever the case this would surely be a hit. Similarly the lament of Greek Song seems so much more real than the put on tragedy of so many contemporary artists. This is true of the title track also and the inspiring Evil Angel.
Rufus Wainwright has begun to get some attention (being added to the Moulin Rouge sountrack for example), but so richly deserves to be far more widely praised. Let this album run around in your head and you'll feel the need to never buy another album. Glorious.
