Description
The Eroica Trio offers a formidable combination of attributes and talents: virtuosity, musical intelligence, adventurousness, and charisma. The group has garnered critical acclaim and commercial success by virtue of its exploration of a varied repertoire that includes works by composers ranging from Bach to Shostakovich and newer works by Paul Schoenfield and Raimundo Penaforte, among others.
PASION finds the ensemble (Erika Nickrenz, piano; Adela Peña, violin; Sara Sant'Ambrogio, cello) venturing into more exotic territory with accounts of works by Astor Piazzolla, Joaquin Turina, Heitor Villa-Lobos, and Penaforte. What all the works on this disc have in common is an emotional intensity and power; what differs is the approach: the voluptuousness and eroticism of tango master Piazzolla, the evocativeness and array of tonal colors of Turina, and the technical brilliance of Villa-Lobos.
The centerpiece of the album is Penaforte's 'An Eroica Trio,' a piece commissioned especially for the ensemble. The three movement work features a mixture of musical styles and serves as a showcase for the members of the group, in particular highlighting their versatility as well as their technical abilities.
