Penned in 1867, the Cologne-born composer Jacques Offenbach's rollicking comic opera The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein, with its story of the puffed-up General Boum's outlandish efforts to tear the Grand Duchess's suitor, Fritz, away from wooing her, is revived in this home release. A film of the Théâtre Musical de Paris's 2004 stage production, La Grande Duchesse de Gérolstein stars Felicity Lott in the title role, Yann Beuron as Fritz, and François Le Roux as General Boum. Mark Minkowski directs, with musical accompaniment by The Musicians of the Louvre, Grenoble and The Choir of the Musicians of the Louvre. ~ Nathan Southern, AMG
