Description

This box set contains three documentaries from Inecom Entertainment Company's "Minutes of History" series. Focusing on important events that helped shape America around the turn of the century, each documentary features archival materials, reenactments, and lively narration that help bring the events to life. The first program, Johnstown Flood (narrated by Richard Dreyfuss), provides details of the devastating flood that occurred on May 31, 1889, in Johnstown, a town of 28,000 in southwestern Pennsylvania. After heavy rains caused the Conemaugh River to rupture a dam above Johnstown, floodwaters inundated the town, killing more than 2,200 people. Dramatic reenactments and firsthand accounts show the impact the tragedy had on a country still recovering from the effects of the Civil War. The second documentary, Expo: Magic of the White City (narrated by Gene Wilder), profiles a happier moment in the country's history, Chicago's World's Fair of 1893. As one of the largest and most expensive extravaganzas ever, the fair saw the debut of the Ferris Wheel and Cracker Jacks, and paved the way for future innovators like Henry Ford and Frank Lloyd Wright to bring their inventions and inspirations to life. The final program in the set is Gettysburg and Stories of Valor. Narrated by Keith Carradine, this documentary is a specially condensed version for broadcast on PBS of the two-volume Civil War Minutes: Gettysburg and Stories of Valor series. Focusing on the most well-known battle of the Civil War, the program visits the historic Gettysburg battlefield and profiles the heroism and personal stories of the men who fought and died there. ~ Sarah Block, AMG
