In1837,thetwenty-five-year-oldCharlesDickenswasaskedtotidyuptheautobiographyofJosephGrimaldi,oneofthegreatestEnglishclownsandpantomimesofalltime.Thetaskwassolaboriousthatheendedupredraftingandrewritingmostofit.TheresultwasaworkcomparabletoDickens'famousearlysuccesses,suchasSketchesofBozandthePickwickPapers,bothofwhichappearedtheyearbefore.AlthoughthebookiswidelycitedandincludedinDickens'completeworks,therearecurrentlynoothereditionsinprintofthisuniqueworkbythemostpopularandbest-lovedEnglishVictorianwriter.
