Director Jonathan Demme, who won an Oscar for The Silence of the Lambs, established his credentials with this sublime, Oscar-winning 1980 comedy that critic Pauline Kael called "almost flawless.” It is the semifictional/true story of Melvin Dummar (Paul LeMat), an average guy whose life is turned upside down when he gives a ride to the ageing, self-exiled millionaire Howard Hughes (played brilliantly by Jason Robards) and becomes the heir to $156 million. But Melvin doesn't take easily to being rich. With its comical blend of fact and speculation, Melvin and Howard is a tribute to the little guy.
