Description
“Still Believing” is a documentary film celebrating the life of Mary Black in music. Segments for the film were shot in the town of Dingle, with Mary performing acapella in the church of St. James’. She is also seen dancing a set and singing in Curran’s Bar with the famous Begley family from Dingle peninsula. Mary was born in Charlemont Street and the streets of Dublin mixed with the beauty of the West Kerry Gaeltacht provide the visual backdrop for this film. Mary sings with her family; Frances, Michael, Shay and Martin in the Cobblestone public house in the heart of Smithfield. She also joins her mother at home for a singsong. Her mother sings “Teddy O’Neill” and Mary’s daughter Roisín (the next generation) sings a song in praise of Rathlin Island, the homeplace of Mary’s father. Though her roots are in the tradition, Mary, throughout her career, has sung and brought to world-wide prominence the songs of some of Ireland’s greatest contemporary songwriters; the late Noel Brazil, Jimmy McCarthy, Mick Hanley, Donagh Long, Shane Howard, Thom Moore and Steve Cooney. In our film “Still Believing” Mary Black tells us her story and takes us on a journey from the home she was born in on Charlemont Street to some of the greatest stages of the world and back again. MARY BLACK LIVE FROM THE OLYMPIA: The documentary is followed by Mary performing live in Dublin. Filmed on the final night of a week long run at her favourite venue, the Olympia Theatre, these concerts were a sort of homecoming for Mary. The songs featured cover the previous ten years recordings and more. In Dublin, in front of a hometown audience, the atmosphere is always special. The band features Pat Crowley on piano and accordion who’s been working with Mary for 16 years; Bill Shanley on guitars, 7 years with Mary ; James Blennerhassett on bass, a relative newcomer after 4 years and Martin Ditcham on drums and percussion, the newest member, with Mary for 2 years. Mary is joined by her friend and special guest Steve Cooney on Spanish guitar, mandolin and keyboard. Australian singer-songwriter Marcia Howard also joins Mary for a couple of songs. For all those who weren’t at the Olympia that night, we hope we’ve managed to capture the atmosphere of this special performance on film.
