GOLDEN MOMENTS - In Andrew Lloyd-Webber's triumphant The Phantom of the Opera it is hard to choose the golden moment, but selecting three such moments solves the problem. The spine tingling 'Masquerade' starts off our collection with 'Point of no return' and 'Angel of music' following later. The show that first brought him to Broadway was Jesus Christ Superstar and again it is hard to select just one golden moment. 'Could we start again please', 'King Herod's song' and 'Gethsemane' are fine examples from this ever-popular piece. If Lord Andrew had to prove his versatility then certainly one would point to both Starlight Express and Cats as examples of where he has stretched the limits of the musical. The charm of Starlight Express is in the fact that the trains take on human fancies but nevertheless remain trains as shown with 'U-N-C-O-U-P-L-E-D' and 'Rolling Stock'. 'Jellicle cats' from Cats uses the same technique but with living animals. Evita, like Jesus Christ Superstar, was made into a hit film that brought Lloyd-Webber an even larger audience. We have three golden moments from this show with 'Rainbow high', 'Another suitcase in another hall' and 'High flying adored'. His Requiem in honour of his father brought to the hit parade the beautiful 'Pie Jesu'. Aspects of Love showed, as its title suggested, various aspects of love and from it we have that golden romantic moment of 'Seeing is believing'. SHOWSTOPPERS - Sunset Boulevard was a show that was in Andrew Lloyd-Webber's mind for many years, in fact the melody of 'Memory' from Cats, which appears here as one of the all-time great showstoppers, was originally written for an earlier attempt at that show. Not surprisingly he had many other great melodies up his sleeve and the leading lady of that show gets two equally brilliant songs to sing 'With one look', which opens this CD, and 'As if we never said goodbye'. Also from Sunset Boulevard we have the rousing title song. Phantom of the Opera as well as have so many golden moments has many show stopping ones as well; the most haunting being 'Music of the night'. ndrew Lloyd-Webber's first show was Joseph and His Technicolor Dreamcoat. It is a show that has grown over the years and was the first he turned into a video production. The song 'Any dream will do' from this show has been a popular hit followed closely by 'Close every door' from the same show. The big show stopping moment of Evita is when Eva stands on the balcony and addresses her people with 'Don't cry for me Argentina' and there is an equally thrilling moment when she sings of the capital city of Argentina, 'Buenos Aires'. Cats is a showstopper in its own right especially with the already mentioned 'Memory' and the delightful 'Mr Mistoffelees'. With the title song of Starlight Express one can see how clever Andrew Lloyd-Webber is in writing popular songs that fit so well on the stage. If a show of Andrew Lloyd-Webber does not run for at least a decade it is thought, by some, a flop. And so, with Whistle Down the Wind he came up with a show that did not have the longevity even though it played for over one thousand performances. We hear the title song from this show that was based on the English film of the same title but, for the show, the locale was changed to the Southern States of America. The stage show Song and Dance started as a television musical called Tell me on a Sunday. On stage it became the 'song' section, the 'dance' section being a choreographed version of his 'cello variations on a theme by Paganini. We hear the original television title song. Another title song, this time from Jesus Christ Superstar, closes our CD of showstoppers. LOVE SONGS - The wonders of the love songs of Andrew Lloyd-Webber can be heard on this, the last of our CDs. We open with the glorious 'I don't know how to love him' from Jesus Christ Superstar, a love song from a show where there was no traditional love story. Not surprisingly we have four songs from Aspects of Love, Andrew Lloyd-Webber's most romantic piece. The songs are 'The first man you remember', 'Anything but lonely', 'There is more to love' and the ever popular 'Love changes everything'. The Phantom of the Opera shows the love of the Phantom for Christine as well as the more conventional love between Christine and Raoul and it is they who sing 'All I ask of you' in the show. Christine also has 'Wishing you were somehow here again' showing the strange position she has been put in. Trains may not be the most romantic of characters but those more human ones in Starlight Express were able to show their feeling in songs such as 'There's me' and 'Only you'. By Jeeves is the reworking of a rarity in the career of Andrew Lloyd-Webber, a flop. Originally simply called Jeeves it did not catch the theatre going public's fancy when first seen. But not giving up on it, Lloyd-Webber and his collaborator, Alan Ayckbourn, revisited the show scaling it down and found they had a new hit on their hands. And so, the lovely 'Half a Moment' can now be heard once more. Song and Dance was originally planned for a limited season but its popularity gave it a long London and New York run. From the song section were hear 'The last man in my life' and 'Unexpected song' which was written for the American production of the show. In Sunset Boulevard our hero falls in love with another Hollywood scriptwriter which sets off the train of events that ends with his death at the hand of the one time movie superstar. The song in which the young lovers show their love is 'Too much in love to care'. Lord Andrew Lloyd-Webber's The Beautiful Game is a love story set in a background of hate; 'the troubles' in Northern Ireland. It is a hard-hitting show that has its tender and amusing moments. From it we hear the show's anthem 'Our kind of love'. The Beautiful Game is the last of Andrew Lloyd-Webber's shows to be seen so far. There are bound to be more in the future and we can certainly be sure that they will all
