In the late 1940s, notorious serial killers Raymond Fernandez (Jared Leto) and Martha Beck (Salma Hayek) left a bloody trail across the United States. Their lethal scam was simple: lure, swindle, and then viciously murder lonely spinsters and lovelorn war widows. As the lust-fuelled lovers continued their killing frenzy, Detectives Elmer C. Robinson (John Travolta) and Charles Hildebrandt (James Gandolfini) themselves grappling with the shocking nature of the murders come under increasing pressure to track down the pair, who would become known as the "Lonely Hearts Killers".
