BLAKEY & THE JAZZ MESSENGERS, ART

Nearly every recording by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, particularly during the 1958-61 period, is well worth acquiring by fans of hard bop. This 1995 CD from the Swiss label TCB features a particularly strong edition of Blakey's group, with trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor-saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Bobby Timmons, bassist Jymie Merritt and the drummer/leader. Together they perform "Now's the Time," two of Shorter's tunes ("Lester Left Town" and "Noise in the Attic"), Morgan's "Kozo's Waltz" and Timmons's recent hit "Dat Dere."
