Saxophonist
Joe Lovano offers some of his most intense playing on the aptly titled LANDMARKS. This disc indeed marks a major point in Lovano's career, establishing him as one of the most powerful tenor men on the modern scene. Not since Rollins or Coltrane has a saxophonist with such a robust sound and passionate disposition emerged to stand above the rest as a leader of stature. His assembled sidemen for the date include the supple guitarist John Abercrombie, the always-inventive Kenny Werner on piano, creative bassist Marc Johnson, and the fiery young drummer Bill Stewart.
Lovano holds nothing back on this session, tearing it up with blazing cuts like the complex opener, "The Owl and the Fox" and the sizzling "Where Hawks Fly." Things can get down and dirty, too, as on the funky "Here and Now," which features a roaring performance by Abercrombie and astounding rhythm work by Johnson and Stewart. Throughout, Lovano's lusty tenor fills up the music with a monstrous presence while remaining expertly musical. To change gears, the appropriate "I Love Music" offers a gentle respite from the fray. Other highlights are the wickedly rhythmic "Primal Dance" and the closing jaw-dropper, "Dig This."
