Indie rockers Grandaddy are like a crucible of rock, psych, and folk influences set to simmer under the mellow California sun. One can hear Neil Young, Pavement, and the Flaming Lips in their sound, but Grandaddy's achievement is blending these into an immediately appealing and wholly self-contained pop brew. JUST LIKE THE FAMBLY CAT is the group's fifth effort and the follow-up to their commercial breakthrough SUMDAY.

FAMBLY CAT moves away from the dreamy, detached air of SUMDAY, however, and returns to the rootsy, energized space-rock of the group's earlier work (the lead-off track, "Jeez Louise," is a case in point). This is not to say that the band has lost its knack for breezy melodies and expansive, folky vistas; the songs thrive on tunefulness, even amid the distorted guitars and layered soundscapes. The band broke up shortly before the album's release, making FAMBLY CAT a noble swan song.
