Julian "Cannonball" Adderley's entry in Capitol/Blue Note's extensive JAZZ PROFILE series is one of the better introductions to the alto saxophonist's long and varied career. Adderley got his start as a star of the hard-bop movement in New York during the '50s. He lead his own combos, usually featuring his brother Nat on cornet, and was often a Miles Davis sideman during this decade. Even before he became one of the leaders of the '60s soul-jazz sub-genre, Adderley was a visionary, inspired soloist, able to sound hard-edged and gentle at the same time.
The style-defining "Mercy Mercy Mercy" was a Top-20 hit in 1967--a rare feat for a jazz record during the rock era. It is, of course, the centerpiece of JAZZ PROFILE, but the rest of the disc features tunes from nearly all phases of Adderley's career. "Bohemia after Dark" is a particular highlight, but the other four tracks are nearly its equal.
