Description
After shaking the foundations of the Australian Jazz world with his first album, "Spell", Vince Jones reappeared with a stirring, soulful follow up - It All Ends Up in Tears. With a line-up of Australia's greatest young Jazz musicians (including Tony Floyd - Drums, Barney McAll - Piano, Doug De Vries - Guitar, Ian Chaplain - Tenor Saxophone and produced by Paul Grabowsky), Vince guides us through a timeless collection of both standards and original material. His band supply not only the fundamental backbone of these tunes, but an energy and a passion that reaches out and grabs you - truly a collection of remarkable performances. For Jones himself, this recording is testament to his prowess - vocally, instrumentally and more importantly with regard to composition. The emotive and passionate "Jettison" demonstrates the subtle nuances of his unique trumpet and flugel stylings (with a magnificent guitar solo from Doug De Vries) while the swinging "Budgie" prove outright the flexibility of his vocal range. It is difficult to pin-point one tune on this record that typifies Vince's compositional excellence, but you truly know it when you hear it. For those unfamiliar with Jones' work, "It All Ends Up In Tears" presents a showcase of smooth, Bluesy tunes that lift the spirit and enlighten the heart. For those unfamiliar with Jazz, this album is one of absolute class - with every track presenting its own message, its own feeling and its own groove. It remains one of the best ever Australian Jazz recordings and among my favourite Jazz recordings worldwide.
