Description
This Japan-only collection assembles very select studio performances of gypsy jazzman Django Reinhardt from 1935-39. Two of these sides are solo performances -- "Parfum" and "Improvisation" -- and the others place the guitarist in the company of American jazzmen like Coleman Hawkins, Barney Bigard, and Rex Stewart, along with his French counterparts. Other tunes here include "Star Dust," "Georgia on My Mind," Billy Taylor Sr.'s "Finesse (Night Wind)," and a stunning rendition of "Rose Room," to name a few. The other notable thing about this recording is how clean the sound is. The Japan edition employs a special technical process to these masters and the result is fantastic. This one may be hard to find, but it is well worth seeking out. ~ Thom Jurek, AMG
