Description
Close to 30 years ago music man Mike Brady penned an ode to Aussie Rules Football. “Up There Cazaly”.
It went on to become the highest selling Australian single of its time and one of our best known sports anthems. It shared the top of the pops in 1979 with the likes of KISS, Michael Jackson, Blondie and The Boomtown Rats and has endured the test of time. Originally recorded under the pseudonym THE TWO MAN BAND, “Up There Cazaly” earnt Mike a reputation as a master of ‘sports anthems’.
Fast forward to 2008 and Mike Brady has cut a contemporary ‘anthem’ that exemplifies the quintessential Australian shared love of sport.
Says Mike: “I arrived in Australia in the late 1950's and I was surprised at the toughness of Australians. I have pondered this with a great fascination for most of my life. Why? What makes Australians so tough? It finally hit me that it was largely to do with the sport Aussies play and the way they play it - Hard & Fair Dinkum!”
The song started as a simple folk song but with the encouragement of the AFL, a full blown production of the song featuring a 50 person choir has lifted it to the level of a new and stirring national sport anthem.
