Description
After winning an ARIA award for their debut album 'Sound As Ever', big things were expected from Sydney band You Am I. Their second album, Hi Fi Way delivered in a big way. Replacing 'Sound As Ever's grunge dynamics with a style more in debt to the Kinks and the Who, Tim Rogers displayed his love for good, old fashioned pop. From the pop fuzz of 'Punkarella' to the tender acoustics of 'Handwasher', everything on this album seems to work. Equal parts feedback and mellotron, the Band rock out in fine style on tracks like 'Jewels And Bullets' and 'Applecross Wing Commander'. They also show a quieter side on 'Gray' and 'She Digs Her'. The influences may be obvious but Rogers' Lyrics are unique and make this not only a great pop album but a uniquely Australian one ("Had a scratch only you could itch, underneath the Glebe Point Bridge" –Purple Sneakers).
