Symphonies No. 96 ‘Miracle’ and No. 94 ‘Surprise’ were composed during Haydn’s successful London period (1791-1795). These are two of his best-known symphonies from his impressive catalogue of 104 symphonies. With both symphonies composed in classical sonata form, the booklet note is a detailed discussion on Haydn’s use of form and its relationship to the formal model of sonata form designated in the 19th century.
