Franz Joseph Haydn made numerous contributions to the world of music. However, for a composer of his stature, he did not delve much into the realm of piano concertos. Of the 14 attributed to him, eight are probably the work of other composers. The three Haydn piano concertos on this album are all the more delightful for their rarity and beauty.
Norwegian-born Leif Ove Andsnes lends his elegant touch to the keyboard as he and the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra perform sweet renditions of concertos Nos. 3, 4, and 11. Dramatic emotional transformations, such as the wistfulness of the Largo cantabile movement leading to the festive finale of Concerto No. 3, are made all the more poignant by Andsnes's deft technique and direction. The urgency of Concerto No. 11 highlights the emotional complexity of Haydn's compositions as well as the ability of Andsnes and his compatriots. The result is an inspiring and contemplative program.
