Description
This disc was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for "Best Classical Vocal Performance."
Young singers are often told that if they learn to sing from Handel, his music will reward them all the more when their voices mature. Though Bryn Terfel has the added benefit of working with conductor and experienced Handelian Charles Mackerras here, his interpretations give the impression that he learned a great deal from Handel in his youth. He digs into these arias with great vigor--much of Handel's music for bass-baritone is very lively--but also with sensitivity where necessary. A gentle, nuanced "Verdi prati" follows a "Si, tra i ceppi" alive with inextinguishable ardor.
Terfel's collection also includes more generally familiar selections: "Ombra mai fu," (commonly known as Handel's "Largo") and all three baritone arias from 'Messiah.' Throughout, he demonstrates admirable control of both legato and coloratura passages. His ornamentation may be a bit too heavy-handed for some tastes, but his command of the material and the excellent backing from Mackerras and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra make this disc a top choice for both fans and listeners looking to get to know Terfel or Handel.
