Based on John Waters' hilarious 1988 film, Hairspray set in Baltimore in 1962 tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair, an even bigger heart and one passion: to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program and, overnight, is transformed from outsider into irrepressible teen celebrity. But can a trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the program's reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a television show without denting her 'do? Hairspray stars Marissa Jaret Winokur (American Beauty; Scary Movie, Never Been Kissed) as Tracy Turnblad, and Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein as her irresistible stage mother, Edna. Hairspray will have appeal across generations: people who remember the early-rock era and such TV shows as 'American Bandstand'; those who saw the movie in the Eighties, and a young audience that would appreciate a show about teenagers. The musical features an original score by Marc Shaiman (who co-wrote the music and lyrics for the acclaimed animated musical South Park: Bigger, Longer And Uncut, Blame Canada) and Scott Wittman. The music takes Tracy from the soundstage of a '60s teen television dance show to the streets of Baltimore to a downtown rhythmand- blues record shop.
