Description
Ju-on: the curse of one who dies in the grip of powerful rage. It gathers and takes effect in the place that person was alive. Those who encounter it… die, and a new curse is born. There are many horror movies which use unpleasant, gory images in order to make us feel uneasy; some use cleverly crafted sound effects in an attempt to scare us witless; a few draw us in by immersing us into a false sense of calm security, before using both visual and audio imagery to startle us from our hypnotic reverie. Very few do all three and get away with it. Ju-on is one of those few. I knew nothing of this movie before receiving the 2 disc review copy, which may have been for the best – I find that ignorance is often bliss where a movie has been hyped to the point of it being impossible not to expect too much, and in this instance my ignorance of Ju-on seems to have had a touch of the opposite effect. I really enjoyed being scared silly by a movie that has a genuine touch of originality. Told in a Pulp Fiction “short story” style, Ju-on manages to hold your attention by focussing on individual characters and their struggle to come to terms with the horror that unfolds around them. This is a very creepy movie, with lots of strange camera angles and odd, jarring sound effects - very Resident Evil (the game, not the movie). Ultimately, what Ju-on: The Grudge lacks in traditional “good conquers evil” style film making, it more than makes up for in downright edge of the seat creepiness.
