Description:
Donnacha Costello relocated from Dublin to New York City in 1998, transplanting his love of minimal production design to a new setting. Releases on Costello's autonomous Minimise imprint caught ears worldwide, eventually leading Achim Szepanski, Frankfurt's titan of experimental electronica, to recruit Costello for his influential Force Inc. label.
On GROWING UP IN PUBLIC, Costello's clean "click-house" tracks deploy varied combinations of digital and dub treatments, pursuing minimal means to maximal ends. Space infuses "Int" and "Rem," turning patterns of bass, bleeps, and beats into audible illusions of infinity. The seemingly rigid rhythms of "Isolate" and "Lateral Thinking" redouble and disperse, recalling the deceptive repetition underlying the work of minimalist magi Steve Reich, John Cage, and Tony Conrad. When Costello couples such techniques with the sound-bending trickery of dub science, the results, such as "Lbp," "Var," and "Melan," are nothing short of gorgeous.
