Description
Going Bush punctures the myth that outback indigenous Australia is inaccessible to mainstream Australians.
Episode 1 - Cowboys, Hot rods and Demons: Cathy & Luke leave the big smoke behind and head for the deserts of Central Australia where the citizens of Hermannsburg are throwing the biggest outback party of their year. They compare shirts and judge fashions on the field with the world's dandiest cowboys, rock up to a waterhole baptism, race moon buggies across the desert, and make a film with kids from the Alice about a young girl who saves her bacon by turning into
Cathy Freeman.
Episode 2 - Devil's Marbles: Cathy & Luke learn how to thrive and survive in the desert with the traditional owners of the Devil?s Marbles -hunting down sand frogs that drink their own urine and starting a fire with nothing but a bit of old wood and some combustible roo poo. Luke puts his newfound confidence to the test on the dance floor and Cathy tries some tongue-twisting rap with the kidz in the hood in Tennant Creek.
Episode 3 - Red Centre, Black Jesus: Cathy & Luke come face to face with the outback icon of Uluru, a singing dingo and an Aboriginal superhero in spandex underpants. They get their hands dirty on a remote outstation that?s planted a vineyard in the desert and find 500 million year old sea creatures at the bottom of the Amadeus Sea. The duo come face to face with black Jesus in Santa Teresa, and get up close and personal with an odorous camel called Maggot.
Episode 4 - Cape crusaders: Cathy & Luke get their first taste of the Cape at a house opening ceremony in Aurukun to move on the spirits of the dead, get their feet wet hunting mud shells in a mosquito infested swamp, launch a community-built catamaran to explore the wetlands and try not to get burnt to a cinder as they learn how to set fire to country. They go barra fishing for their supper at Mapoon, protect baby turtles at Janie Creek, and join renowned Aboriginal potter Thancoupie as she erects memorial poles to her ancestors in a moving ceremony on Bawtjawthi beach.
Episode 5 - Islands hoppers: Cathy & Luke journey to the outermost edge of Australia as they explore the islands of the Torres Strait. On the tiny volcanic island of Erub they reef dive for crayfish, race model canoes and discover the coming of the light. On neighbouring Mer, they have their totems carved, pay their respects to Eddie Mabo and learn the secret of everlasting love from the cabbies at Ron & Maria's Taxi Service. Their journey climaxes on Saibai Island, where the dividing line between what is Australia and what is not is blurred by the relatively free movement of family, traders and cultural influences across the border with Papua New Guinea.
