Bruce Springsteen's 1995 album, The Ghost of Tom Joad is a return to the folk music style of his early career. Taking the title of his album and its title track from a character in John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, Springsteen echos the themes of this novel, exploring poverty and desperation, but within the modern setting of the southwestern United States in the 1990s. Much like a novel itself, this album takes the listener on an empathetic journey through the lives of drifters, broken lovers, and lost souls. It is a beautiful album, unforgettable in its willingness to explore themes that most songwriters dare not touch. Well received by critics and fans alike, The Ghost of Tom Joad was quickly certified Gold and received a Grammy for "Best Contemporary Folk Album."
