This 1992 outing by
Joe Lovano displays the musical maturity and compositional skill of the acclaimed tenor saxophonist. On FROM THE SOUL, there are fabulous performances rendered by each member of Lovano's quartet, which is no surprise given the all-star lineup. Pianist Michel Petrucciani stands out as usual; his hard-swinging solos show off his technical virtuosity and harmonic inventiveness. Bassist Dave Holland's lucid solos on "Evolution" and "Portrait of Jenny" are also quite amazing, as is his overall interaction with drummer Ed Blackwell.
Lovano himself shines throughout, as he carefully blends together bebop with a dash of the avant-garde on all 10 tracks. It is this coalescence of genres that makes this album such a compelling listen. The best example of this fusion of styles is "Modern Man," a Lovano composition that is performed as a sax-and-drums duet. Other highlights include the angular "Lines and Spaces" and the group's delicate version of John Coltrane's classic "Central Park West."
