Description
In the world of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, once a kid dreams up a new companion, it becomes real and visible to everyone else. And while Imaginary Friends are seen on the streets every day, it doesn't mean that everyone loves them.
Sometimes kids outgrow their Imaginary Friends. Sometimes a kid moves and becomes separated from his pal. Some Imaginary Friends weren't very good ideas to begin with. And every once in a while, a parent will force a kid to give up his Imaginary Friend before he's ready to do so.
These are some of the reasons why Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends exists. A massive Victorian mansion, it serves as a haven for Imaginary Friends who no longer live with the kid who created them. Madame Foster, the grand, if kooky, matriarch, had her very own Imaginary Friend way back when. She found Mr. Herriman years later, waiting patiently in the attic of her childhood home, and it gave her the idea to create a place for erstwhile Imaginary Friends. She even put the overgrown, proper bunny to work as the home's administrator. Her granddaughter, perky but put-upon Frankie, serves as the cook, nurse, babysitter and therapist to the fragile and funky residents. Together, they have created a fun, loving environment for the Imaginary Friends, but the ultimate goal is for each and every one of them to be adopted by a new boy or girl.
Mac is a normal, if sensitive and shy, 8-year-old boy. He's kind and creative but a bit of a pushover. Blooregard is the best friend Mac could have imagined. Smart, opinionated and a bit of an instigator, Blooregard comes up with the oddball schemes and talks Mac into going along. Then Mac has to bail him out with his calm, clear thinking. They are a perfect complement to each other.
One day, after a particularly destructive encounter with Mac's older brother Terrence, Mac's mom convinces her youngest son that it is time for Mac and Blooregard to split up. Mac doesn't like it, but this time his mother seems serious. When he finds out about Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Mac knows what he has to do. When Mac and Blooregard arrive, they realize this is just about the weirdest, most perfect place in the world. Still, it is difficult for Mac to give Blooregard up. Seeing the bond these two have, Madame Foster agrees to let Mac visit often every day if he wants and promises not to let anyone else adopt Blooregard.
Inside the house, there is a seemingly infinite number of Imaginary Friends. Wilt is the ultimate sports guy, except that he's lost part of an arm and has a wonky eye. Still, it doesn't stop him from being incredibly gung-ho and positive all the time. Eduardo looks ferocious, with a stocky build, horns and fangs, but this Spanish-speaking behemoth is a real sweetheart underneath his purple fur. And Coco well, too much time in the sun has left her brain a bit scrambled. Then there's Duchess. She thinks she's the best Imaginary Friend ever invented and doesn't mind telling everyone so. Despite her designer pedigree, no kid wants to adopt this bossy, snobby manifestation of bad taste. And no one at Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, including Frankie and Mr. Herriman, want to have anything to do with her, either.
The home itself is a marvel. No architect would ever concoct a floor plan as odd as the one at Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. Stairways criss-cross, hallways go on and on and there seems to be no end to the number of rooms. Every style of décor is represented here from a mod game room with shag carpeting to a formal baroque sitting parlor. Sure, the house has its share of leaky pipes and creaky floors, but it's a magical place that feels like home to everyone who lives there.
