Description
Long time Cure connoisseurs often cite FAITH as their favourite album – and with good reason. Haunting keyboards are draped over a heavy bass, while layered guitars provide a signature Cure-calling card – rarely has such a lack of melody been so compelling. Released in 1981 and peaking at Number 14 on the UK album charts, the tone is clear from the outset as “The Holy Hour” begins with the sounds of chimes, which seem to invite the listener to a Mass where depression is the only celebrant. The upbeat Cure classic “Primary” follows as does the atmospheric “Other Voices”, but the hypnotic “All Cats are Grey” is a true stand-out - reminiscent of the calm in the eye of a storm; it’s comatose nature is truly compelling. The tenebrous mood continues through “The Funeral Party” which ushers in FAITH’s only low points – “Doubt” does little more than evoke thoughts of being stuck in mud, while “The Drowning Man” sounds like Smith vomiting to the sounds of discordia. These passing lows are more than made up for with the title track which sees FAITH end on it’s most compelling note – fading out as Robert Smith moans ‘with nothing left but Faith…’ While only clocking in at 37 minutes FAITH stands out as a true testament to the Cure’s sombre intensity at it’s most acute peak.
