Description
It all started in the 1950's when Frenchman Marcel Baison had the idea of uniting Europe with a European Music Festival, modelled on The San Remo Festival in Italy, and saw it as a way of uniting the nations of post-war Europe. The idea caught on and it was first broadcast in 1956 (although without the UK who had missed the deadline to enter!). However, here we are 47 years later and stronger than ever, with 26 entrants in this years contest which will be broadcast on SBS on 25/5/03, from Latvia's Olympic Stadium in Riga, to 37 countries and more than 100 million viewers! So once again we are anticipating who the big winner will be and who will come away with "nil points". This year sees the usual diversity of entrants: the UK's own Liverpudlians Jemini, as well as Romania's Nicola, who is representing her country for the 6th time. There are the songs more representative of a country, such as Spain's entry, 'Dime' from Beth, and Turkey and Israel have both chosen to enter established artists into the competition. In fact Sertab Erener from Turkey actually performed on Ricky Martin's last album, ensuring her worldwide notoriety! Of course this album would not be complete without including the slightly crazy entries from Austria and the Ukraine! Also included on the album is the track from Sweden's Fame School winners, Jessica Andersson & Mangus Bäcklund, and Russia's controversial lesbian schoolgirls T.A.T.U.
