Description
EROTICA is from the most difficult era of Madonna's career. It was released in 1992 on the heels of the SEX book of photos of a naked Madonna engaged in various sexual fantasies (partners ranged from Vanilla Ice, to Naomi Campbell, to Isabella Rosalini, to rapper Big Daddy Kane) and only weeks before the release of the movie BODY OF EVIDENCE where Madonna's character was accused of sex-ing a man to death. The one-two-three punch of sex, sex, sex, was just too much! We'd finally had enough of her. EROTICA peaked at #2 on the charts, the first time since 1984 that a Madonna album failed to make it to the top spot. The tragedy is that EROTICA is perhaps the best album she's ever made. The beats are great, the lyrics have never been better (before or since), and the production is more sophisticated than ever. Madonna confronts the darker aspects of life that she had only hinted at in previous albums: jealousy ("Theif of Hearts"), unfaithfulness ("Bad Girl"), and the AIDS epidemic ("In This Life"). She even makes the Peggy Lee standard "Fever" seem brand new, as though we've never heard it before. Now that the fiascos of 1992 have died down, maybe we can enjoy this album for the beautiful music it contains.
