Description
James Joyce is considered to be one of the most influential writers of the early 20th century. His best-known novels are Ulysses and Finnegans Wake and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916), which is a semi-autobiographical novel. Dubliners, published in 1914, is a collection of interconnected short stories. The 15 short stories depict life in Dublin for the middle class. Children narrate the beginning stories. As the stories progress the characters are progressively older with the final stories being about mature adults. Many of the characters will have minor roles in Ulysses. Joyce's idea of an epiphany: a moment where a character has a special moment of self-understanding or illumination is central to many of the stories.
