The Doctor and Peri travel to Androzani Minor, a planet whose only real resource is a substance known as spectrox. From this substance a life prolonging drug is produced. A battle is being waged by Androzani Minor's; semi- deformed Sharaz Jek, controller of the spectrox and government troops who have been sent in an attempt to break his monopoly over the drug. Jek must also contend with long time enemy Morgus, a powerful industrialist based on Androzani Major. The Doctor and Peri fall foul of Morgus's men and are scheduled for execution, Jek, who is infatuated with Peri, rescues them but his unstable nature makes him an unreliable ally. When the Doctor and his young companion become aware that they have been exposed to a life threatening substance, it forces the Doctor to make a difficult choice.
