Description
An excellent 20-track anthology, 1994's DIAMONDS: THE BEST OF SHIRLEY BASSEY is probably the best of the many single-disc compilations devoted to the Welsh cabaret singer. DIAMONDS covers Bassey's years with the EMI label from the mid-'50s through the early '80s.
Besides the expected James Bond themes such as "Diamonds Are Forever," and "Goldfinger," DIAMONDS includes nuggets like torchy versions of George Harrison's "Something," "I (Who Have Nothing)" and "What Kind of Fool Am I." Brassy, booming versions of great tunes like "Big Spender" and "As Long As He Needs Me," and larger than life renditions of "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" and "Reach for the Stars," are also heavily featured. Fun, flashy, and immensely entertaining, DIAMONDS is a cabaret-style gem.
