DEFENSE BLUES is the companion volume to BOURGEOIS BLUES: GOLDEN CLASSICS PART ONE, part of Collectables Records' extensive folk-blues reissue series. Though these budget-priced compilations are brief (with only 10 tracks on each disc), together the two discs provide a representative introduction to one of the 20th century's most unique talents. The genius of Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter was his ability to combine the deceptively simple acoustic Delta blues of his native rural Louisiana with a sophisticated mingling of folk, jazz, country, gospel, and pop elements. Though most of Leadbelly's recordings are solo acoustic performances (just he and his 12-string guitar or button accordion), his music is a direct antecedent to the rock & roll revolution, which was just beginning when he died in 1949.
